Advisory centre officially opened

The Gambian-German Advisory Centre for Jobs, Training and Reintegration (GGAC) in Serrekunda celebrated its official opening at the beginning of June. The team had already started work in the previous months.

The centre and its partners offer a range of services. They are aimed at both potential returnees from Germany and the local population in The Gambia. The counsellors support people in their search for a job, for example. The GGAC team also provides psychosocial support and advises on setting up a business or taking further training.

The Gambia's Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MOTIE) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH cooperate on the operationalisation of GGAC. The centre is part of the commitment of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to support voluntary return and sustainable reintegration.

Offering people new opportunities

Representatives of the Gambian and German ministries and agencies, United Nations entities, the International Trade Centre (ITC), GIZ and other key stakeholders attended the opening ceremony."We are working worldwide to reduce the causes of flight in the short, medium and long term and to create prospects for people. We see migration and return as a social and economic challenge for individuals and their countries of origin," said Johannes Behrens, Deputy Head of the BMZ's "Return, Reintegration" division.

The aim is to give returnees new opportunities. The countries of origin also benefit from this, he said.

Fabba Jammeh, Director of Employment at MOTIE, was also pleased with the official opening of the centre. His hope: If people realise what opportunities they have in The Gambia, they will not leave their country in the first place, especially through irregular pathways.
