New opportunities through regular migration: Emmanuel received a scholarship to study in Germany

After completing his bachelor's degree, Emmanuel found himself with limited career opportunities. Seeking guidance, he approached the Nigerian-German Center for Migration and Development (NGC). Now, he is furthering his education at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences, supported by a scholarship.

My name is Emmanuel, I am 34 years old and come from Enugu State in Nigeria. After completing my bachelor’s degree in social work at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, I was looking for professional orientation. Through a friend, I learned about the Nigerian-German Center for Migration and Development (NGC) and arranged a first consultation in April 2022.

Trainings and paid internship

At the center, I initially took part in a three-day training course and learned how to create a resume, write motivation letters, and how to prepare for job interviews. The NGC also placed me in a paid internship at the organization Project One Nigeria, which is active in political education. Unfortunately, I did not receive a permanent position in the organization after the internship.

Inspired by the internship experience, I decided to continue my education and sought advice from the NGC again in 2023. There, I learned about the possibilities of studying in Germany. With the support of the NGC, I applied for a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for a two-year master’s programme in Human Rights Studies in Politics, Law and Society at the University of Applied Sciences in Fulda, including a German language course. When the scholarship was granted, my wife and I were very happy. We immediately started learning German with online apps.

Moving to Germany with Visa

The visa application for my wife and me was approved after a short time and we traveled to Germany in April 2024. I am happy about the new opportunity in our life. As a social worker, I want to advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and inclusion in Nigeria in the future, and my studies in Germany will definitely prepare me for this. The fact that I am blind has never stood in the way of achieving my goals.
